The Gersfeld Winter Sports Club was founded in 1909 in the Rhön Mountains of Hesse, and from 1914 to 1922, the first 25-meter ski jump stood on the Simmelsberg. This was later replaced by the Kälberrainschanze, which remained in use after World War II and allowed jumps up to 26 meters. There was also the ski jump at the Schwedenschanze.

With the re-establishment of the Gersfeld Winter Sports Club, a 65-meter ski jump was built on the Reesberg in 1949/50. The first test jumps on the natural ski jump in 1950 reached a height of 56 meters, but then a 21-meter-high and 63-meter-long inrun tower was built. At the inauguration in February 1951, Horath set a ski jump record of 72 meters. Later, numerous Hessian championships were held there, and top jumpers such as Helmut Recknagel and Werner Lesser competed at the Reesberg in front of up to 4,000 spectators. However, in 1960, the ski jump had to be abandoned because it was located within the Wildflecken military training area. (Info Skisprungschanzen.com)
