The lakes are located in the Rhineland Nature Park, which is in the immediate vicinity of the cities of Cologne and Bonn. The more than 1,000 square kilometers of area is a popular local recreation area due to its proximity to the cities. The landscape is characterized by forests, rivers, lakes, and hilly volcanoes. Several idyllic villages are nestled between them.
