The tower from the 14th century is part of the 2nd city fortification, which was baptized by fire in 1629 in the 30-year war and brought the city of Burg the title: "... a well-kept city". During the Thirty Years' War, the city of Burg and Swedish troops fought violently at the three-storey Berlin gate tower from 1626-1644. With the Witches Tower and the Kuhturm, it is one of 30 defense and watch towers along the city wall.

The dungeon on the first floor was once used as a prison. The middle section with its loopholes was used for defense and the residence of the prison guard. The upper floor housed a retreat reminiscent of sacred buildings with a fireplace for the guards of the city wall. The open fireplace still provides warmth today when Advent readings by the Heimatverein Burg und Umgebung e.V. take place by candlelight and mulled wine. Weddings have also been possible here since 2001.
The viewing platform offers an atmospheric panorama over the castle and the Elbe lowlands.
