Nice place to take a break.

The history of wars and warriors line our paths, when will we learn from them?

The swampy terrain with willows and reeds was an excellent hiding place. With everything they had - bedding, clothes, food and personal items - they drove their cows or horse and carts on hidden paths to the Rhine islands (they called them "Wörthe" at the time). In the hiding places they lived in leaf and cane huts. Even the pastor of Scherzheim baptized children and married couples during this time. Occasionally, depending on the situation, the men ventured back into the village to check that everything was going well. Often they only discovered ruins of their houses. The legend now goes: A swarm of horsemen wanted to raid an island on the Rhine between the Old Rhine, Rench and “Grund” because they suspected that there were residents from Helmlingen. In order to get to this island, they intended to cross the Altrhein-Altwasser. However, they got into a shoal. All riders drowned in the oxbow lake and drowned. Since that time that place has been called "the knight's hole". Today a plaque commemorates this legend.
