The Queen's House is a residential building inside the fortress of the Tower of London. The house is located in the southwest of the inner wall. Construction began in the 1540s and originally served as the living quarters of the Constable of the Tower. Over the course of many hundreds of years of use, the house changed its purpose several times. Among other things, it served as a prison. The house stands on the site of a previous building from the 14th century, traces of which can be found in the cellar. This, too, probably belonged to the Constable. When the Queen's House was built, rooms from the Bell Tower were incorporated into the building and are accessible from the Queen's House. In 1607, the builders divided the upper floor into two storeys. The upper part of the former great hall was converted into a council chamber. A brick extension on the ground floor and a staircase to the south of the building also date from the 17th century.
