Today the Friedrichsgracht runs between the Getraudenbrücke and Sperlingsgasse. It is a riverside street on the narrow Spree Canal, with an impressive development of historic and modern houses. Here you will also find the Jungfern Bridge, the oldest remaining bridge in the city.

The name Friedrichsgracht or Friedrichsgraben became popular in the second half of the 17th century, when Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg (1620–1688, called: the Great Elector) had the branch of the Spree canalized by Dutch specialists. The name referred to the part of the Spree arm that today runs between the Inselbrücke and Gertraudenbrücke in the historic Alt-Kölln district.
The name Friedrichsgracht was later transferred to the riverside road that was built between 1670 and 1681 as part of the construction of the fortress and the regulation of the left arm of the Spree, which encircled the entire southern part of Alt-Kölln starting from the Spree.

One of the last quiet places in Mitte. If there are too many people in Mitte for you, just walk up and down the canal and enjoy the peace and quiet. Today, the canal or the Spree Canal is used for flood regulation.
