Whether it's a soldiers' cemetery, a war grave, a memorial, or a simple cross by the wayside: many places or monuments encountered on the way bear witness – still significant and relevant today – to the horrors of war and tyranny. They all have – and this for every generation anew (!) – two essential functions:
-1- To commemorate and remember the victims
-2- To urge the preservation of peace

Hiking

Hohnstein Castle rises an impressive 140 meters above the Polenz Valley. The rock faces drop steeply into the valley from three sides. The only access is via the market square in the town of Hohnstein, whose landmark is the castle, which is said to have existed as early as 1236. As a fief of Emperor Charles IV, King of Bohemia, the frontier fortress was transferred to Hinko I. Berka von der Duba in 1353.
