The monastery complex has a varied history. The Benedictine convent was founded by Bishop Brunward in 1232. In 1575, the monastery became a Protestant women's convent. In 1927, it was taken over by the Rostock Local Health Insurance Fund, then by the Reich Labor Service. From 1950 onward, Rühn served as a youth correctional facility and stood empty for 15 years after 1990. The monastery association then purchased it and gradually expanded it. Since then, Rühn Monastery has become the center of many monastery-related activities, such as the monastery market, the Advent market, exhibitions, and concerts. There is a monastery tavern with a farm shop. In just a few years, Rühn Monastery has become a cultural center of the region.

The church was built around 1260. At 45 meters, it is unusually long, but only 12 meters wide. The altar dates from 1587. It depicts a Last Supper, and the side wings feature portraits of Duke Ulrich I and his wife Elisabeth.
