The more than 100 km² large national park was opened in 1932 as the first national park in Ireland. It borders the town of Killarney and includes the three lakes Lough Leane, Muckross Lake (also called the middle lake) and Upper Lake. One of the oldest remaining oak forests in Ireland, located in the National Park. The park has an impressive flora and fauna. It grows yews, mosses, lichens and ferns. There are also numerous flowering plants, such as shrubby strawberry trees and tall rhododendron shrubs.
