Hiking
Later, tropical climates and ancient seas wore down most of the mountains, but the tough hornfels protected the granite underneath—like a natural shield. Eventually, earthquakes lifted the Harz Mountains, and erosion began carving into the granite. Only a few hornfels "caps" remain today.
