It was first documented in 1380. It originally consisted of two wings joined at right angles, the western of which was demolished early on.
The city castle served as the seat of the Ulm bailiffs from 1396 to 1635, as the seat of the inspector (weighmaster) and tax collector from 1635 to 1810, and as the tax office from 1810 to 1995. Today, it houses the city's technical departments.
