The watchtower was built in 1422 to protect against the Counts of Zollern at the time of the city wars, when the County of Hohenberg was pledged to a consortium of 19 Swabian imperial cities. Next to the Schütteturm is the Ottilien chapel, built around 1431, which was visited as a place of pilgrimage by many eye sufferers.
In 1900, three Horber clubs renovated it as an observation tower.
