After the defeat of Austria-Hungary in World War I, the Karlsburg National Assembly proclaimed the union of Transylvania with the old Romanian kingdom on December 1, 1918. In the Alba Iulia Declaration of Accession in February 1919, the Transylvanian Saxons welcomed the accession to the Kingdom of Romania. In 1920, the integration of Transylvania into the Romanian state was enshrined in the Treaty of Trianon.
