It is an equestrian statue by the sculptor Anatole Celestino Calmels and was inaugurated on October 19 , 1866 . It is 10 meters high and weighs five tons of bronze. It is an image of Pedro IV of Portugal riding a horse at a trot, dressed in uniform, which was his usual attire. In his right hand he holds the Constitutional Charter of 1826 and in his left the reins of the horse.

Although the Praça da Liberdade is near the São Bento train station and surrounded by the Avenida dos Aliados, it is very quiet here.
A few cafés and restaurants along the street invite you to linger. Small shops sell souvenirs and holiday memories
During major national events, the Praça da Liberdade is transformed into a large fan mile that is visited by many thousands of locals and guests.
