During the Neolithic period, which took place in Sardinia between the 6th and 3rd millennium BC. BC, unknown Stone Age peoples created small, approximately one cubic meter large chambers with rounded corners in the elephant rock, so-called Domus de Janas (Eng. fairy houses).
Scientists who undertook the first archaeological investigations suspect the rock tombs of a ruler about whom nothing is known so far. A relief depicting stylized bulls was found on the inner wall of one of the burial chambers.

The Elephant Rock (Italian Roccia dell'elefante) is a weathered, approximately 5 meter high boulder that, when viewed from a suitable angle, resembles an elephant. It is a tourist attraction in Sardinia and is located about 5 kilometers southeast of Castelsardo in the metropolitan city of Sassari.
The bizarre rock was already a place of worship during Nuraghic times (around 1800–750 BC). The ancient Sardinians carved small niches into the rock in which they buried their dead in ash urns.
