Grave of the Sandman (sand trader) Ernst Köhler, who hanged himself here on June 20, 1922.
The mentally disabled Köhler was often mocked and teased by those around him, including on June 19, 1922, the day of his presumed death, when he had stopped at the Wernitzgrün Inn. They went to extreme lengths that day, getting him drunk and ultimately disfiguring his hair to such an extent that the desperate man hanged himself on the Kammweg trail on his way home.
