Straubing Zoo is located in the west of the city of Straubing. It is currently home to over 2,000 animals of approximately 200 species, primarily mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The zoo participates in several European conservation breeding programs, for example, for European bison, Amur tigers, African penguins, and Bali starlings. It is a partner zoo of the Species Conservation Foundation and a member of various national and international zoo associations and species conservation organizations, such as WAZA and ZGAP.

Founded in 1937, the zoo is nestled within a recreational park and is open year-round. It is bordered to the southwest by Federal Highway 8 and traversed lengthwise by the Moosmühlbach stream.

The tropical house, known as the Exotarium, contains enclosures for marmosets, various bird species, smooth-fronted caimans, iguanas, snakes, and other reptiles. The adjacent free-flight aviary houses two-toed sloths, various bird species, and red-eared sliders and is open to visitors.
