It was formerly used for the drinking water supply of the city of Bad Doberan. After such a use was no longer necessary, the tower was used as a viewing platform and as a venue for concerts and exhibitions, such as "Aqua Nostra".
In 2004 the tower was renovated and converted for residential purposes. It is under monument protection.
