Saint John the Baptist (Saint Jean Baptiste), to whom the cathedral of Lyon is dedicated together with Saint Stephen (Saint Etienne), is – like Saint Joseph – a man on the threshold between the Old and the New Testament. His parents are Zechariah and Elisabeth. After the proclamation of God's incarnation, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, John the Baptist. This is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner / pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches the repentance of sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, where Jesus also comes to be baptized, being filled with the Holy Spirit that descends on him from heaven.
The memorial day of John the Baptist (Jean Baptiste) in the calendar of saints is on June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.

Saint Stephen (Saint Etienne), together with John the Baptist (Jean Baptiste) namesake of the Cathedral of Lyon, is one of the first seven deacons of the early Jerusalem community and is the first martyr (martyr) of early Christianity. The church commemorates him on Boxing Day, December 26.
When Stephen cried out his vision of the open heaven, "But he, being filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God" (Acts 7:55), the people were so indignant that that they drove him out of the city and stoned him.

The construction of the Cathedrale Saint-Jean took more than 3 centuries: from 1178 to 1480. The cathedral is a beautiful mix of Romanesque and Gothic architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
It is one of the most important symbols of Lyon, especially because of the main entrance on the square. Inside you can admire the 16th century astronomical clock and beautiful stained glass windows from the 12th century.
