During the First World War, the forest was in British territory and was a final resting place on the way to hell. The Plankenroute or Plank Road connected the woods with the center of Vlamertinge. It was along this road that the soldiers moved to the Yser front. The British gave it the name “Dirty Bucket Camp” referring to the inn de Vuile Seule ("seule" is West Flemish for bucket).
