The British military cemetery 'Dozinghem Military Cemetery' contains the remains of 3,312 dead from WWI. The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield and covers an area of approximately 12,300 m². The name Dozinghem - also the name of the WWI evacuation hospital - is derived from the English verb 'to dose': administering medicine or anesthetic in small quantities.

Westvleteren was behind the front line during WWI. In July 1917, in preparation for the Third Battle of Passchendaele, dressing posts were established at three locations, which the troops called Bandaghem, Dozinghem and Mendinghem. The 4th, 47th and 61th Casualty Claering Station were housed in Dozinghem and Dozinghem Military Cemetery was used by them until the first months of 1918. 65 German soldiers are also buried here. The cemetery also has 73 graves of those killed in WWII. These are victims of the withdrawal to Dunkirk at the end of May 1940.
