The old weir was built in 1974 as part of the expansion of the Röder Canal (Große Röder) as a cultural dam and was in need of renovation. It was dismantled and a new weir with a fish ladder and a bicycle and pedestrian bridge was built about 20 m downstream at the mouth of the Black Elster.
