The tombs of the necropolis are made of sandy limestone. They are constructed as shaft, chamber, and atrium tombs. Architecturally, they exhibit Greek forms. Stepped dromoi lead into a rectangular chamber in the chamber tombs, from which tunnel-like openings (loculi) extend; in the atrium tombs, they lead into an inner courtyard with a peristyle. From the peristyle, entrances lead into antechambers, from which a system of individual or interconnecting burial chambers extends. The tombs were intended for multiple burials. The rectangular pillars or Doric columns, carved from natural rock, continue at the top into a horizontal, unarticulated entablature or architrave. Metope and triglyph friezes cut into the rock form the upper section. The recess in the rock above the entablature must be considered the support of the former covering (Wikipedia).

The enormous underground tombs were hewn from solid rock.
