The history of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi is similar to that of the Church of San José, the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, and the Cathedral of Panama. Its origins date back to the time when Panama City was located in what is now Panama Viejo. The Convent of San Francisco was one of the largest. St. Francis of Assisi was the patron saint of animals and ecologists. Incidentally, he is my saint, as I was born on October 4th and he was canonized by the Catholic Church on that day in 1228.
