The Catholic St. Ludgerus Church in the East Frisian town of Norden (Aurich district) was built in 1885 and belongs to the East Frisia deanery of the Diocese of Osnabrück.

After the Reformation, no Roman Catholic parish existed in the Lutheran Norden, and the Emden Concordats prevented the establishment of a new one. Catholic services were held irregularly, initially underground, and later regularly in the chapel of Lütetsburg Castle at the instigation of the devoutly Catholic wife of Dodo zu Innhausen und Knyphausen. Catholic services are documented in 1720 in a rented room at Großneustraße 1 in Norden.

On January 4, 1779, the Prussian King Frederick the Great decreed that Catholics in Norden and the surrounding area could freely practice their religion. Subsequently, a chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael, along with a rectory and school, was established in a building complex at Sielstraße 55/56. According to Pastor Franz-Josef Strieker, who served here from 1852 to 1861, it was barely larger than twelve by seven meters and could more accurately be described as a "poor prayer room, inconspicuous and hidden in a way that suggested the Catholic community had something to hide or was even just a tolerated or suppressed sect." Furthermore, the church was not recognizable as such from the outside. At the beginning of 1859, helpers went from house to house in two major districts of the diocese, Aurich and Osnabrück, to collect money for the planned church construction in Norden. A non-cancelable, interest-free loan from the Münster fur trader Josef Hötte ultimately secured the financing. After ten years, repayment was to begin, "when they (note: the congregation) are in a position to do so."

In 1864, a rectory with a chapel was built at Osterstraße 20, followed in 1885 by a regular church on the rear part of the property. In accordance with the wishes of the founder, Hötte, the church was dedicated to St. Ludgerus, to whom the Protestant Ludgeri Church in Norden was already dedicated.

The Ludgerus congregation experienced a strong growth spurt after the Second World War due to the influx of displaced persons from Silesia. Today, it has approximately 3,800 members.[3] St. Ludgerus is also a regional meeting place for Catholic Vietnamese. Many boat people settled in Norden itself.
