"Cycling between the Mine Terrils" is the official name of the floating pontoon bridge that connects the twin terril and long terril (also known as the panorama terril) in Terhills.

The shape of the bridge is inspired by the so-called golden ratio or Fibonacci spiral. The price of the whole was kept lower than versions with prestressed concrete by working with floating pontoons: 28 concrete containers that are filled with insulation, are hinged together and held in place by 26-meter-long tubular piles, according to bouwkroniek.be/openbare-ruimte-infra/ingenieuze-pontons-slingeren-sierlijk-tussen-mijnterrils-51497

It remains to be seen whether more cyclists or walkers will now use the bridge that opened in the fall of 2024. My impression is that the bridge is mainly walked on with the resort as an important factor. The focus on cycling can probably be explained by the fact that the bridge is the final part of a cycle connection between Terhills and the small station of As.

In any case: the bridge has supporters and opponents, is of course quite impressive to walk on and also from the slag heaps it is a special view. According to some a beautiful view and for others an additional disruption of what was increasingly becoming a beautiful natural view of the former mining sites.

Due to the wet weather the bridge was built with a few months delay. The cost was also a lot higher than expected.

The "Mijnterrils Bridge" is a new, 300-meter-long floating bridge in the Hoge Kempen National Park in Belgium, part of the "Cycling Between the Halden" experience.
