Most of the forest is designated as an FFH area and protected as the "Elmendorfer Holz" landscape protection area.
The forest area is north of the Zwischenahner Sea. It is characterized as a near-natural oak and hornbeam mixed forest on moist locations with transitions to acidic beech forest with holly. In many cases, mixed forests are also pronounced, with small areas of stalked alder and ash forests. The dominant tree species are oaks. Some of these are well over 100 years old.
