This Gerdau church was dedicated to Archangel Michael. The name (from the Hebrew) means "Who is like God?". He is often shown - in paintings or as a statue - with a flaming sword, occasionally also a lance. Along with Raphael, Gabriel, and Uriel, Michael is one of the four archangels who rank highest (in human conception) in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.
