This house belonged to a guard, a person responsible for limiting the passage of vehicles and people at a level crossing, usually between the railway and a busy road. This work, now automated thanks to computer systems, once required a practically continuous presence, so the worker and his family settled in these buildings.

Their job was to prevent vehicles from crossing the railway when the gatekeeper was raising or lowering a barrier (sometimes this barrier didn't even exist), thus ensuring that no accidents occurred during the crossing.
Because the gatekeepers needed to remain at these crossings, they often lived with their families in these huts, where they occasionally had a piece of land to grow vegetables from the gardens to feed their families.
