Like many of the bridle paths across the moors in Yorkshire, this descent has been partly resurfaced with stone flags.
These were historically used to allow pack-horses to travel across the tops without their hooves sinking into the soft peat, and the same is true today. Without the flags, crossing the top of the moor can be a muddy, squidgy, frustrating exercise in futility, especially if it's been wet.
The downside is that if you ride without suspension it can make for a rather sore experience!
