The church was built on the foundations of older church buildings. There was a church here before the town of Haldensleben was destroyed by troops from the Archbishop of Magdeburg, Wichmann, in 1181. This was also destroyed in 1181. Together with the reconstruction of the city, a new church was built in 1223. From 1375, the construction of a three-aisled Gothic style church began. In a city fire in 1661, however, this structure was largely destroyed. The reconstruction was completed in 1675.
