The Lion of Souville marks the southernmost point reached by German troops during their offensive on 11–12 July 1916. This point was just a few hundred metres from Fort de Souville. This zone contained extensive French trenches, corridors and shelters connecting the fort to the front lines, including the site of the present monument .
The French defence was organised in depth, with multiple lines of trenches and underground passages that were crucial for communication, supply and troop movements. This infrastructure made it possible to hold Fort Souville despite heavy bombardment and attacks.
