On September 19, 2021, the volcano in the Cumbre Vieja mountain range erupted and began spewing ash and lava.
The volcanic eruption lasted until December 13, 2021, and was officially declared over on December 25.
The 1122-meter-high volcano is now called "Tajogaite"; Cabeza de Vaca was another suggestion, because that is the name of the area around the eruption site.
The 14-kilometer-long Cumbre Vieja volcanic chain is geologically younger than the Cumbre Nueva, which extends from the Refugio El Pilar northeast of it, although the name suggests otherwise.
