Originally, the entire moor was called Vinter Moor, or in some documents, Espeler Moor. The original moor encompassed large parts of the towns of Neuenkirchen, Recke, and Mettingen. With the increasing cultivation of the remaining moorland, the names Recker Moor emerged for the remaining moorland in the municipality of Recke, and Mettinger Moor for the resulting wet meadows in the municipality of Mettingen.[3] Since almost all of the intact moorland areas are concentrated in Recke, the name is now referred to as Recker Moor.
