The town hall, along with Bertholdsburg Castle and the medieval town layout, is one of Schleusingen's most interesting buildings. Located on the southwest side of the market square, the building served as a widow's residence for Countess Elisabeth for several years after the death of her husband, Count Georg Ernst von Henneberg, in 1583. In 1586, she sold the building to the town, increasing the purchase price from 1,500 to 2,000 guilders and donating the proceeds to the town's poor.

Each year, based on the mayor's accounts, a decision was made regarding who would receive support from the endowment. As a token of gratitude, the town erected a statue of Countess Elisabeth on the Schleusingen market fountain.

Today, the town hall is preserved in the post-Gothic secular style of the 17th century. When the upper town gate, which once stood at the intersection of Königstraße and Ilmenauer Straße, had to make way for road construction in 1832, the Schleusingen council decided to give the upper gate's clock tower, complete with weather vane and compass rose, a new, more appropriate place on the town hall. Due to financial constraints, the project took several years to complete, but a piece of the past was nevertheless preserved.

Above the town hall door are the Saxon and Naumburg Abbey coats of arms. They still bear witness to Schleusingen's "Saxon" period, which lasted from the extinction of the Henneberg line until 1815. To the left of the entrance, two iron ells are embedded in the wall. These represent the Brabant and Saxon ells.

The town of Schleusingen has held market rights since 1533. It was always explicitly stated that the "Schleusingen measure" was also used in Schleusingen, meaning that the corresponding measure was used according to the town's respective territorial affiliation. The two ell measures located at the town hall alone clearly illustrate the differences in length measurements of that time.
