The first documented mention of St. Kilian dates back to 1187 as a chapel in Erla, which belonged to the Veßra monastery. In 1570, St. Kilian received its own parish and thus became of central importance for the surrounding towns of Erlau, Breitenbach, Altendambach and Hirschbach. The late Gothic church was built in 1690. St. Kilian now has around 210 residents and is an attractive residential location as well as a commercial location for smaller businesses.
