The Marktlinde was first depicted on a figurative map of Westerlo from 1556. A dairy market was also said to have taken place under the tree in the past.
    History
The lime tree was said to have been planted around 1630 at the height of the medieval hall that burned down at the end of the 16th century. Underground masonry has been preserved within the tree's enclosure, possibly originating from this hall. The Marktlinde was first depicted on a figurative map of Westerlo from 1556. A dairy market was also said to have taken place under the tree in the past, where the butter and eggs could be kept cooler under the canopy of leaves. The lime tree is also depicted on a figurative map from 1712, on the Ferraris cabinet map (1770-1778) and on the Vandermaelen map (1846-1854).

Historical tiered trees were usually formed in three tiers: the bottom tier represents the people, the middle tier symbolises the clergy and the top tier symbolises God. The Westerlo lime tree has only two tiers, of which the bottom one has to be supported. The original wooden fence was replaced in 1871 by a cast and wrought iron frame designed by Pieter Jozef Taeymans. The fence was badly damaged during a storm on 6 November 1921. The cast iron fence was restored in 1987-1988 and the tiered lime tree was also subjected to thorough tree maintenance at that time.
