The Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor in Antequera (Málaga) is one of the most emblematic monuments of the Andalusian Renaissance and a must-see for art and history lovers.

Founded by Bishop Diego Ramírez de Villaescusa, who obtained a papal bull from Pope Julius II in 1503 to erect a collegiate church in the city.

Construction began in 1514 and continued until 1550, making it one of the first examples of Renaissance architecture in Andalusia.

The monumental facade is made of ashlar stone, with three vertical sections and semicircular doorways topped by arched niches.

Gothic elements such as fluted pinnacles are combined with Renaissance designs inspired by Italian models, such as Orvieto Cathedral.
