The Red Pavilion was built in 1808/09 by the architect Carl Theodor Severin at the suggestion of Frederick Francis I, initially in the shape of a funnel as a music hall and refreshment bar. This was preceded by the founding of the first German seaside resort in Heiligendamm in 1793. Shortly after 1800, the Kamp, where the pavilions were later built, was landscaped. Originally, there were tents on the Kamp as lodging houses and restaurants, but these became unsightly over time and were replaced by the Red Pavilion in 1809 and the White Pavilion in 1813.
Severin blended the Chinese design elements of the Red Pavilion, an influence presumably from the Duke, with cool and austere Classicism. This combination of East Asian and Classicist architectural styles was rare at the time and today underlies the architectural significance of the Red Pavilion....
