It was built after the Second World War out of gratitude, and consecrated on 19 May 1946. The grotto is built from stones from the demolished underground passages that served as a shelter at this location during the Second World War.
In front of the grotto is a stone pulpit, which makes me suspect that prayer services are sometimes held here.
