In 1924 Hildburghausen celebrated its 600th anniversary.
In order to commemorate Count Berthold VII of Henneberg-Schleusingen, who had granted Hildburghausen city rights in 1324, a section of the city wall was broken through to create a shortened path from Knappengasse to the avenue. The gate that was created in this way was provided with baroque gate walls that came from houses on Obere Marktstraße and gave it the name Bertholdstor. Incidentally, above the Bertholdstor is the only place where the remains of the former battlements of the city wall can still be seen.
