    In 1833 tracks were found in a quarry near Hildburghausen, secured and first described by Friedrich Sickler in 1834. The engraver Carl Barth also made a great effort to secure and evaluate the traces. The merits of both were finally acknowledged by Johann Jakob Kaup in 1835, in which he named the found footprints chirotherium sicklerii and chirotherium barthii.
