In Zoutleeuw too there were beguines and bogaarden ('male' beguines, so to speak). Originally the beguines lived outside the city because otherwise they had to meet certain conditions. At the end of the sixteenth century they bought the grey sisters' convent and in 1604 they built a church there. It later became a school and was demolished in the 1970s, except for these remains - a small piece of tangible history.
