In 1057 Archbishop Adalbert of Bremen probably consecrated a first church at today's location. It is considered the center of a first large parish in what was then Ammergau. There may have been an older wooden church before, like in other places. Adalbert placed the church under the protection of John the Baptist and Saint Radegundis, whose mention is unique in this area.

First early medieval church
The oldest part of the hall church, built around 1200, is the retracted (i.e. less wide compared to the nave) choir square with groined vaulting and a semicircular, low apse. It has the small arched windows typical of the early days with wide-opening soffits.
