The Wester-Spätinge Nature Reserve (size 27 ha) in the district of Nordfriesland, which has been in existence since 1978, serves to protect a coastal, brackish wetland with swampy and aquatic areas as well as salt-loving plant communities. The nature reserve is breeding, resting and feeding area of a species-rich bird life as well as habitat of the invertebrates of this landscape.
    history
The Wester late arrivals are already mentioned in the 16th century. Here, the farmers of the area have taken over the years the material for the dike construction, i. "Abgespatet". From this activity, the area name derives. From an old silted arm of Hever developed over time a marshland, an ideal habitat for rare animals and plants. Originally a brackish water wetland, sweetened after the dyke reinforcement in 1962, the Wester-late rings increasingly. This changed the plant and bird life. Salt-loving plants such as the Queller and the Strandaster disappeared increasingly, for reeds populated wide areas.
