The Roman Catholic Holy Virgin Mary Church in Willemstad is a neo-Gothic church built in 1875 to a design by architect P.J. Soffers. Even before that time, namely around 1566, there was a parish in the then village of Ruigenhil. During the Eighty Years' War, however, the pastor was chased away by the Protestant Watergeuzen. Only a few Catholic families remained, who went to church outside Willemstad. In 1834, a church barn was built on the Landpoortstraat. Only when this fell into disrepair did they start on the current church building. During the Second World War, the church and the tower were damaged, but the Holy Virgin Mary Church was restored and could be put back into use in 1950. Today, the church is privately owned and is no longer used for church services. It is currently not possible to visit this church from the inside.
