In the 1980s, today's nature reserve was still a relatively dry and predominantly intensively cultivated area. As part of compensatory measures for the development of commercial areas in the vicinity of Neustadt Harbor, which resulted in the loss of wet meadows, the use of the area was extensified and arable land was converted to grassland. Since the mid-1980s, flood plains, ditches and still waters, wet meadows and wet fallow land have been created. From then on, further agricultural use of the areas was extensive. The area was further upgraded at the end of the 1980s, when the Ochtum was relocated and redesigned in a natural way as part of the expansion of Bremen Airport.
