This dike was built around 1808 to prevent the island from breaking in two. Forced by the government, the Ameland farmers used wooden boards and horsepower to push the sand together into a sand dike. The dike was not very strong and therefore broke through several times. It was not until around 1850 that they succeeded in blocking the seawater here for good.
