The wayside shrines were created out of a desire to show the image of the Mother Thrice Admirable to the public and to make Schoenstatt's emergence of grace present in the communities.
The wayside shrines are preferably set up near existing crosses. The first was erected in 1978 in Udenheim in Rheinhessen near a baroque field cross that dates back to a refuge of Irish-Scottish monks. They brought the cross with them as a tree of life.
