With over 80,000 flight movements per year, "Frankfurt-Egelsbach Airport" is the "busiest general aviation airport in Germany" and is valued by business travelers for its high level of flexibility, short distances and fast handling processes. With around 30 companies and 700 jobs, it is an important commercial location and has been the address of the Hesse police aviation squadron since 1964.

While the Egelsbach meadows served as a runway for model airplanes from 1953, motor and glider traffic started on the paved "Texas runway" as early as 1955. In 1966, the runway was asphalted and in 2004 it was extended by 410 meters to 1400 meters.

The expansion plans were controversial from the start. Local farmers (1950s) and citizens' initiatives (1980s) from Egelsbach and Erzhausen opposed environmental destruction and increased aircraft noise, even at night. In connection with expansion plans, a number of tall trees were suddenly felled in the dead of night. The outrage over this spread across large parts of the population. Citizens' referendums prevented the privatization in 2009. Many organizations, including the Friends of Nature Egelsbach-Erzhausen and citizens of the surrounding communities, became members of the Flight and Noise Control Association (FLAG) and have since been committed to protecting nature and the environment and to improving the quality of life in the region.
